Broad Quality Results Support a Recovery Case With an Important Exception

Alignment Healthcare, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALHC) announced on October 8 that six of its seven eligible Medicare Advantage contracts earned at least four stars for 2027, including three with 4.5 stars. However, its California H3815 HMO contract received 3.5 stars.
The bullish interpretation is that quality performance across several markets supports the company’s ability to operate a competitive senior-care business. Strong ratings across multiple contracts could provide a foundation for retaining members and pursuing financially attractive enrollment. The results suggest that the investment case should be examined contract by contract.
The exception matters because contract counts do not reveal where most members—and financial exposure—sit. Investors need membership distribution before estimating the impact of H3815. Management intends to pursue administrative remedies and litigation and says it aims to restore that contract to at least four stars; neither outcome is assured.
A stronger thesis would emerge from resilient margins in the highly rated contracts, controlled medical costs and a credible plan for the California exposure. Assuming a successful rating challenge would make the case unnecessarily fragile.
