Fast-Growing Medicines Help Offset an Older Franchise’s Decline
Novartis AG (NYSE: NVS) offers a useful reminder that modest companywide growth can hide much faster expansion underneath. Second-quarter 2026 net sales reached $14.41 billion, increasing 3% in U.S. dollars and 1% at constant currencies.
Several priority medicines moved considerably faster. At constant currencies, Kisqali sales increased 43%, Kesimpta rose 32%, Scemblix jumped 89%, and Pluvicto advanced 43%. Those gains show why investors examining pharmaceutical stocks need to look beyond the headline revenue figure.
The offset was substantial. Entresto sales declined 50% in U.S. dollars to approximately $1.18 billion. Stronger newer products therefore had to replace lost revenue before contributing much additional growth at the group level.
Profitability also deserves a closer reading. Quarterly net income fell 19% to approximately $3.26 billion, while free cash flow declined 12% to $5.6 billion. Management reaffirmed its full-year outlook, anticipating low-single-digit net sales growth and a low-single-digit decline in core operating income.
The investment thesis rests on the changing revenue mix. Continued expansion from priority brands could strengthen the earnings base over time, but the transition needs to appear in consolidated profits as well as individual product sales. A healthy supplied net profit margin is encouraging; it does not eliminate the work required to replace declining revenue.
