A major new surgical robot has regulatory authorization; commercial adoption is the next hurdle.
Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) moved further into the surgical robotics race when its OTTAVA robotic surgical system received U.S. FDA De Novo authorization in August. The table-integrated design gives the company an opening in soft-tissue procedures and adds a serious competitor to a market long associated with Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISRG).
Authorization matters, but it is the beginning of a commercial test. Hospitals must decide whether the system fits their operating rooms and budgets. Surgeons must train on it, use it consistently and see enough benefit to support broader adoption. Investors should watch placements and procedures rather than assume an approval will quickly produce substantial sales.
Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) also has a vast business outside robotics. That provides financial strength, although it means even a promising OTTAVA launch may have a limited effect on the group’s near-term earnings. It ranks seventh as a credible robotics contender with much of its commercial story still ahead.
