6. Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE:NVO)

Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE: NVO) remains one of the most important pharmaceutical companies in the world. Ozempic and Wegovy helped transform GLP-1 medicines from specialized diabetes treatments into some of the most commercially significant products in modern healthcare. The company’s influence extends beyond weight loss. Semaglutide-based medicines have changed how physicians, patients and investors think about obesity as a chronic disease requiring medical treatment. Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE: NVO) also retains a major global position in insulin and rare-disease care, giving it broader scientific and commercial capabilities than a pure obesity-drug company.

However, the company takes only sixth place because the investment story has become more complicated. Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE: NVO) reported first-quarter 2026 sales of DKK 96.8 billion, but that figure included a significant one-time accounting effect connected to the reversal of a U.S. rebate provision. On an adjusted basis, sales were approximately DKK 70.1 billion and declined 4% at constant exchange rates. Adjusted operating profit also fell 6%. Pricing pressure, particularly in the United States, offset continued growth in GLP-1 prescription volume. This is the key issue investors must understand: the company continues selling enormous quantities of obesity and diabetes medicines, but lower realized prices and intensifying competition can prevent prescription growth from translating directly into comparable profit growth.

The company is not standing still. Its expanded Wegovy franchise included approximately 475,000 weekly U.S. prescriptions by mid-April 2026, while the oral Wegovy pill reached approximately 207,000 weekly prescriptions and more than one million patients after its U.S. launch. Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE: NVO) also received approvals for a higher 7.2-milligram Wegovy dose in several regions and continued advancing a broad pipeline in obesity, diabetes and rare diseases. The oral product is particularly important because many patients prefer tablets over injections, potentially opening the obesity market to a much larger population. Still, the company must compete against a rapidly expanding Eli Lilly franchise while protecting market share and managing pricing pressure. Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE: NVO) remains one of the best obesity stocks for long-term investors, but its weaker adjusted growth and heightened competition keep it outside the top five.
